Original Harland & Wolff design drawing of Ship No.400, Olympic and her sistership Titanic, Ship No. 401.
This design was approved in Belfast on 29 July 1908 by Bruce Ismay and other White Star directors. The general arrangement drawing reflects leading edge naval architecture, including the division of the hull into a series of virtually watertight compartments. Also apparent is the huge amount of space occupied by boilers and engines. The 'dummy' fourth funnel is not connected to the coal-fired boilers, but positioned above the turbine room. Its purpose was to enhance the prestige and beauty of the ship.
